Lackluster trade with bearish overtones
 
At 5 pm, the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) lost 1.53 points to 925.59. Volume expanded to 300.47 mln shares valued at RM453.39 mln. Losers outpaced gainers 335 to 294, while 373 counters were unchanged and 416 untraded. The Emas Index dropped 0.16 points to 210.52, while the Second Board fell 0.16 points to 86.69. Share prices ended the day lower in listless trade in the absence of fresh leads. There was some light bargain hunting in selected blue chips, but gains were capped due to a general lack of interest. Most investors were reluctant to take heavy positions ahead of the weekend. Among blue chips, Tenaga at RM10.70 declined 10 sen, while Malayan Banking at RM11.50 and Telekom at RM10.10 were both unchanged. Naim Indah Corp unchanged at 23 sen was the most active counter with 9.53 mln shares traded.
 
YTL Power International said it has bought back a total of 2.5 mln of its own shares for RM5.45 mln between October 3 and October 7. Following the purchase, the total number of shares retained in treasury amounts to 183.82 mln. YTL Power International at RM2.17 was unchanged at RM2.17.
 
A total of 11 mln Kurnia Asia shares representing 0.73% shareholding were transacted in a direct off-market deal on October 13. Filings with Bursa Malaysia showed that the shares were transacted at RM1.09 each. The counter closed unchanged at RM1.09.
 
Mulpha International said it bought back a total of 1.27 mln of its shares at 58.5 sen to 61.5 sen each, or a total of RM757,554, between September 29 and October 10. The company said that following the purchase, its total number of shares retained in treasury stood at 17.82 mln. Mulpha International at 58.5 sen decreased 0.5 sen.
 
Pin-Wee Group will change its name to Pinwee Group with effect from Tuesday, October 18. The poultry farm operator said its stock short name and stock number remain unchanged. Pin-Wee Group was not traded at 49 sen.
 
Hong Leong Bank announced a gross final dividend of 15.5 sen payable 30th Nov 2005 to shareholders who buy the share before 11th Nov2005.  This brings the gross dividends this year to 24 sen, (17.3 sen net) representing a net dividend yield of 3.2%.
 
Among highlights for today, Sime Darby at RM6.20 (unchanged); Proton Holdings at RM8.50 (unchanged); Malaysian Airline System at RM3.16 (-18 sen); AirAsia at RM1.52 (+1 sen); Guinness Anchor at RM5.65 (+15 sen); KUB Malaysia at 45 sen (+0.5 sen); NV Multi Corp at 45.5 sen (-1 sen); Kinsteel at RM1.07 (unchanged); British American Tobacco at RM37.25 (-75 sen); Octagon Consolidated at 84 sen (-1 sen); Lion Diversified Holdings at RM1.76 (unchanged); Ingress Corp at RM1.16 (unchanged); MMC Corp at RM2.18 (unchanged); UMW Holdings at RM5.55 (unchanged); Arab-Malaysian Corp at RM1.09 (unchanged).
 
Japanese stocks fell on Friday, with gains in chip-related and warehouse stocks countered by profit taking in banks and steel companies and on shippers. The Nikkei 225-Average declined 0.21% to 13,420.54. Banking stocks fell 2.3% as investors took profits following Thursday's strong rise in the wake of encouraging bank lending figures. The iron and steel sector slumped on profit taking, ending the day down 3.2%. The real estate sector fell 0.6%, after being the star of the week on excitement about tight supply in the Tokyo office market. But warehouse stocks benefited strongly on Friday from the bullishness towards stocks with large property portfolios. Investors have been nervous about chip-related stocks, ahead of next week's earnings announcement by Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker. But securities houses calmed nerves with some positive assessments of chip-related companies. Sea transport sector shares plunged after UBS lowered the ratings of the 3 top companies.
 
The only gainers in the region were Taiwan's TWSE at 5,969.07 (+0.15%) and Indonesia's JCI at 1,096.704 (+0.57%), while the rest of the bourses were in bearish mood; Hong Kong's Hang Seng at 14,485.88 (-0.93%); Singapore's STI at 2,303.24 (-0.75%); South Korea's KOSPI at 1,190.17 (-0.27%); Thailand's SET at 700.15 (-0.59%); Philippines' PCOMP at 1,953.14 (-0.10%).
